Racism at work

Here in Australia, many face discrimination and racism but are not able to speak up. They don’t know how to respond to discrimination, racism and racist comments in their workplace. So as the manager, you have to carefully consider the impact of racism within your organisation and how will you able to solve this problem.

Within an organisation, the leader may face several discrimination scenarios and other issues involving diversity such as anti-Semitism, unwanted sexual advances, or misunderstandings about LGBTQ lifestyles, marginalising others. But, the way you communicate around such problems including racism will define your impact as the leader and as a human being.

As a leader, you need to set a tone for your organisation. You need to clearly state to your team about zero-tolerance policy against racism and discrimination among employees. You need to set clear guidance and will eventually go down among your subordinates. Everyone should know where your stand and the reasons why you prohibit unequal treatment based on skin colour.

If you see or hear one of your employees expressing or acting on racist views, you need to intervene. You also need to be mindful to their personal safety. If incidents happen, you should investigate and handle the situations through appropriate disciplinary measures.

As the employer, you should be the first person who avoids racist comments or acts. You should be the first one to show a good example that your employees will follow. You need to take some time learning about different cultural backgrounds. This can help improve your team spirit and reduce the chance of misunderstandings resulting in complaints, disciplinary action or an employment tribunal claim.
